Rock-n-Raw Baby!
Raw food Tacos by GPeters
On January 1st I am going raw for 30 days. No, not WWE Smackdown Raw, but Vegan Raw. (cue the music “Dun-Dun-Dunnnn…”)
Why? Well, why not?! I mean, I’ve tried everything from the hamburger meat/water diet to the popping pills diet to the Eggo waffle/hotdog diet, so I am definitely no stranger to experimentation. (yes, those were all real) But really, I am not doing this as a fad diet, it’s a personal challenge. Actually, someone challenged me that I wouldn’t be able to hack eating this way for 30 days, and I, Fitarella, hate to be challenged! The nerve!! (I keep hearing Patrick Swayze say “Nobody puts baby in the corner!”) So, I’m accepting the challenge, strapping on my stilettos and digging deep for my inner raw vegan diva!
What is Vegan Raw? Well, according to Wikipedia it is called Raw Veganism and is a diet which combines veganism and raw foodism. It excludes all food of animal origin, and all food cooked above 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit). A raw vegan diet includes raw vegetables and fruits, nuts and nut pastes, grain and legume sprouts, seeds, plant oils, sea vegetables, herbs, and fresh juices. There are many different versions of the diet, including fruitarianism, juicearianism, and sproutarianism. Sometimes the definition of a raw vegan diet is loosened to include vegan diets with at least 75% raw foods. Interesting, no?
Well, right off the bat I was a little wigged out by the “excludes all food of animal origin.” That pretty much nixes most of my current daily diet! (girlfriend here loves meat! and eggs! And butter!) And then add the fact that whatever I do eat can only be raw? Sheesh, just called me Jessica Rabbit! (well, if I have her bod after this it’ll be worth it) I can’t even have coffee because its cooked. Coffee is like my crack! (I see a major caffeine detox in my near future. Oy, the headaches.) Still, part of me is excited, there’s that “ooooh, i’m trying something new” feeling. It’s kinda cliche that i’m starting on Jan 1st, but why not? New year, new challenges, new goals. Repeat.
I’ve done some online research and reading and there is actually quite a variety of foods & meals that look really yummy and I’m excited to make. A very good friend that is a Jiu-Jitsu instructor/competitor did this challenge as well, and said he has never felt better or healthier. And this is coming from a former bodybuilding, super athletic, uber carnivore! (I mean this is a big boy) Wish me luck! I’ll be updating ya’ll throughout the 30 days.

Ok, J. I’m considering it. It doesn’t sound bad at all, and sounds like something I might be able to do! Challenging? Yes. Impossible? No.
I’m going to search around for vegan recipes, and hopefully get myself together by 01/01/10.
Thanks for the heads up!

Hey Fitarella!
I wish you all sorts of luck and success and above all – feeling great! And good luck with those stilettos, too (wait…maybe that’s not a problem for you…me? I’d end up in the hospital, living on the feeding-tube diet…)

Ok send me those recipes…I am in. The video just gave me chills. My basis will probably be salads as well with nuts…but definately will need some inspiration and support…we can support and cheer each other! I am not sure I will have my family on board for the entire thing, though may try some things along the way…any is better than none in my opinion.
So Friday will be the day!! Searching easy recipes and making my list and checking it twice!!
Then off to my local food co-op for me

You will absolutely love the raw lifestyle. Although I don’t eat raw 100% of the time, I try to as often as possible. I completely notice a difference in how I feel after a few days of eating all raw and I feel soooo much better.
My biggest tip? Make sure you stock up on whatever your food vice is. Mine is definitely salty treats, so I make sure to have plenty of salty things ready to go so I’m not tempted to go back to eating junk. Plenty of kale chips, crackers, spiced nuts, etc. If sweet is your thing, there are plenty of awesome raw desserts out there! There are a zillion great cookbooks out there, and plenty of excellent recipes on the web.
Check out Raw Freedom Community, Raw Food Talk, or search for the hundreds of raw food blogs.
Good luck!

I’ve been following your tweets and while I don’t think I could do 30 days (I despise veggies, I’d probably die from lack o’ food) I may try 1-2 days a week!
