Chia & Goji Berries

A lovely lady introduced me to Chia on her blog.  I was fascinated that she said it had taken the place of her beloved Flax seeds, but was kinda grossed out by the goopy black things she demoed (for our enjoyment).  Anyhoo, fast forward months later and I finally ordered some of my own from Hidalgo Foods.  I also ordered regular Goji berries and dark CHOCOLATE covered Goji Berries (I figured I could trick the man & child into eating them this way…TOTALLY worked!)

So for our Chia experiment we decided to add them to a protein shake (I figured if they were yucky the Vanilla taste might help them go down better.)  Lately I’ve been too lazy to use the blender so instead I have a Blender Bottle! Oooh!

In went Vanilla whey, Stevia, Chia and the wire whisk

Once I added skim milk and shook it all around the Chia went right to the bottom.  I had to keep re-shaking to bring them back up.

What did we think? Well, my Sous-chef said something along the lines of “Eeeew that looks yuck!” and ran off.  Me? I actually liked them.  They didn’t really taste like anything, but had a nice crunch, although, the longer they sat in the shake the more they turned a little gooey.  That didn’t bother me until I had a few stuck in my teeth that later transformed into little globs I had to use dental floss to get out.  However, the benefits far outweigh (High in Omega 3s, fiber & antioxidants) the flossing!  If you use flaxseed I definitely suggest giving Chia a try.

The Goji berries were a little different.  The plain ones have a really strong taste, kind of like a sweet & sour raisin.  I think I could eat them mixed in yogurt, but probably not as a plain snack.  However, the dark chocolate covered ones were AWESOME!!!  Man & Child renamed them Go-Go berries!  They are rich in Vit. C, Zinc, chromium, copper, iron…and a bunch more.  It is said that they help the body’s ability to resist disease.

Have you tried any of these before?  If so, how do YOU eat them?  Suggestions? Comments?

I had never heard of Goji’s until yesterday when I bought a mixed fruit juice containing Goji’s (because the name sounds cool). But Chocolate Goji’s? That sounds so much better.
